The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society's Third Thursday Lecture in November will open your eyes to all of the wonderful parks, interesting points and activities along the length of the St. Johns River.
The St. Johns River Alliance's (SJRA) mission is to "preserve, protect, promote, restore and celebrate the St. Johns River as an American Heritage River." One activity that helps fulfill that mission is that SJRA is responsible for promoting the St. Johns River as an official state paddling trail. Speakers Andrea Conover, SJRA Program Manager, and Gus Bianchi, retired Navy and teacher, recently completed kayaking the entire river. Their presentation shows how the 310-mile north-flowing river changes from its headwaters in the marshes west of Vero Beach through the lakes and springs of the middle basin to the wide, developed and busy lower basin. Along the way, one finds old Florida fish camps, towns, restaurants, parks and springs. Their presentation includes photographs, maps and a list of access points to enjoy the river. Their photos are fascinating as well as breath - taking. The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society presents Third Thursday Lectures quarterly in partnership with the Mandarin Community Club to educate the public about historical figures, general history and events in and around Mandarin, including the St. Johns. This event will be presented on Thursday, November 19 at the Mandarin Community Club, which is located at 12447 Mandarin Road. Refreshments are at 6:30 pm with the presentation at 7:00 pm. It is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 268-0784. Learn about Mandarin Museum activities at www.mandarinmuseum.net. UPDATED - The "Music Under the Oaks" series have been changed. The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society will be hosting the event every first Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Mandarin Store and Post Office at the corner of Mandarin and Brady Road, adjacent to the Mandarin Community Club property.
For more information, please contact the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society at 904-268-0784. The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society is hosting a monthly acoustic music jam at the historic Mandarin Store and Post Office. If you play a traditional acoustic instrument (guitar, banjo, mandolin, etc.) and enjoy singing or playing with others, you are invited to come out and play the first Sunday of each month from 1 - 3 pm. The first jam will be February 1. The Store and Post Office, which illustrates life in rural Mandarin, will be open during this time for tours as well.
Depending on the weather, the jam will be held outside, or inside the old-time store. Either is a perfect setting to join other musicians in a round of sharing and playing together - under the old oaks on this beautiful historic property or inside the building that was the heart of Mandarin for many years. If it’s been awhile since you’ve played, don’t worry. This is an open jam for participants at any level of experience. Dust off that instrument and join right in. Do bring your own chair and water, as we are limited in what we can provide at this location. “Listeners” are welcome, but please bring your chairs too, and enjoy the beautiful music being made by local musicians. It will be a fun time." Location: At the Mandarin Store and Post Office at Mandarin Community Club: - 12471 Mandarin Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32223. For more information, please contact the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society at mandarinmuseum@bellsouth.net or call (904) 268-0752. The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society and Mandarin Community Club is proud to honor Black History Month by presenting the story of the courageous Sisters of St. Joseph. Eight Sisters from France were asked by the Bishop of St. Augustine, Bishop Augustin Perot, to fulfill a very special mission. They accepted their call and came to Mandarin to teach, and thus starts the story of the recently saved 1889 schoolhouse and why it came to be built. The quarterly lectures are presented in partnership with the Mandarin Community Club to educate the public about historical figures, general history and events in and around Mandarin. The February event will feature information about the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph to bring education specifically to the African-American children in the area who had been recently freed from slavery. The mission actually began in 1866, with the one-room schoolhouse building built for them in 1889. The story of these women of faith is one you will not want to miss. The speaker is Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick who wrote the authoritative book, Beyond the Call – The Legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Augustine, Florida. She will discuss the history of this important mission in our post Civil War community. Her book will be offered for sale at the event. Sister Thomas Joseph lives in St. Augustine and serves the O'Reilly House Museum. This historic house was the original convent for the sisters in St. Augustine. The program will be presented on Thursday, February 19 at the Mandarin Community Club, which is located at 12447 Mandarin Road. Refreshments are at 6:30 PM with the presentation at 7:00 PM. It is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend. Visit the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society at www.mandarinmuseum.net. The historic schoolhouse has finally been acquired and almost ready to be moved to its new home at Walter Jones Historic Park. Check out the news article on Jacksonville.com.
