**Correction/update to the guest speaker for the Third Thursday Lecture**
In honor of Black History Month, the February program will feature a lecture by Devan Lesley, Norman Studios Co-Chair. Devan Lesley will show a documentary and discuss Jacksonville’s silent film history and its unique contribution to African-American cinema. Hollywood East: Florida’s Silent Film Legacy explores how the top motion picture producers of the day came to reside in Northeast Florida and why they left for the West Coast. "Founded in 1916 Jacksonville, FL as Eagle Film City and purchased by Richard E. Norman in 1921, the Norman Studios was among the nation's first to produce "race films" starring African American characters in positive, non-stereotypical roles. "On the Norman Studios site, some of the first films featuring all African-American casts were produced more than a century ago. This five-building complex is the sole studio remnant of Jacksonville's heyday as the Winter Film Capital of the World..." County Dock Rezoning Community Meeting Scheduled
Mandarin Community Club 12447 Mandarin Road Date: Monday, May 1st Time: 7-8:30 p.m. A resolution was adopted unanimously earlier this year by the Board of Directors of the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society opposing Ordinance 2016-805, which would rezone almost 10 acres adjacent to County Dock Road. This rezoning, with access to County Dock Road, would forever destroy the scenic character of that road, one of only three roads in the City designated as scenic and historic corridors. County Dock Road is only 17 feet wide and has an extensive tree canopy, with many trees located within feet of the pavement. Similar positions have been taken by the Mandarin Community Club, Scenic Jacksonville and City Beautiful Jax. Here is a photograph showing the scenic beauty and narrow width of County Dock Road - between Mandarin Rd. and Loretto Rd. If you are interested in learning more about this issue, please plan to attend this important community meeting. Susie was honored with this year's award by the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society on Saturday afternoon, March 4th.
Susie and her husband Bruce moved to Mandarin on Mandarin Road in 1998 where she built a barn which she filled with her passion and hobby, Arabian horses. Susie was invited and served on the NFES Board/Advisory Board for many years to support the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. She discovered an even greater passion while living in Mandarin when she joined the Mandarin Community Club and Mandarin Museum and Historical Society with Life memberships in 1999. Susie worked with MaryAnn Southwell and Sharon Copeland to draft and adopt the Scenic and Historic Corridor Ordinance for Mandarin Road. Susie worked with Jacksonville community leaders as one of the five petitioners of the Citizens for Tree Preservation group to get the Charter Amendment passed. She has gone on to work with neighbors and as a Board member of the Mandarin Community Club on Mandarin and citywide issues. She served for almost 2 years on the Vision Committee to help draft the Guiding Principles for the 2030 Comprehensive Land Use Plan. Susie has served multiple times as President of the Mandarin Community Club and since 2009 as Chair of the annual Mandarin Art Festival. Susie is currently serving in both roles while also serving on the Advisory Board for Scenic Jacksonville. Photo and article by the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society February's lecture is in honor of Black History Month - a powerful performance called "Slave Narratives and Folklore."
Sponsored by the Stetson Kennedy Foundation, talented actors from the Readers Theater will bring individuals to life through dramatic storytelling. Those who are portrayed were actually men and women who had endured slavery and lived to tell their stories in their elderly age. You will hear their oral histories through their own words, in their own tones and inflections. Much of the program was taken directly from the actual interviews conducted by the WPA Florida Writer's Project in the 1930s. Some of these oral histories were then compiled in the book by Stetson Kennedy called "The Florida Slave." This event will be presented on Thursday, February 16, at the Mandarin Community Club, which is located at 12447 Mandarin Road. Refreshments are at 6:30 pm with the presentation at 7:00 pm. It is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 268-0784 or www.mandarinmuseum.net. |
