The Mandarin Community Club hosted a Storm Alert Response Program on June 9 for Club members, local neighborhoods and guests from the general public. Even though ironically a heavy prolonged rainstorm continued throughout much of the program, the weather did not deter between 40 and 50 people from attending and learning more about weather emergencies.
The speakers included Scott Cordero, Meteorologist in Charge from NOAA/National Weather Service and a representative from COJ Fire and Rescue Emergency Preparedness Division. As meteorologist, Cordero covered the statistical data of hurricanes including past trends, climatology science and the 2015 Hurricane Season prediction. Laura D'Alisera from COJ provided critical information on how the local government agencies prepare and respond to weather emergencies. Each year the tools for predicting, tracking and responding improve but the general consensus is how very lucky the Jacksonville area has been. The last major storm that made a direct hit was in 1898. Even though Dora did major damage in 1964 it was officially only rated a Class 2 storm event. New methods separate the ratings for wind effects of a storm from the surge effects which inundated the Jacksonville Beaches and many areas including Mandarin during Dora. Hagan Ace of Mandarin brought in an impressive and comprehensive array of products for use for storm preparation, power outage prep and property damage response. The Mandarin Community Club gave away a stocked Emergency Kit and several other weather related emergency products from Hagan Ace including a weather alert radio, a computer/cell phone charging device utilized in an automobile and a large Mag flashlight. One of the longest operating and oldest Community Clubs in the nation, the Mandarin Community Club is a local not for profit community based organization whose membership is open to all. |
