The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society is hosting a monthly acoustic music jam at the historic Mandarin Store and Post Office. If you play a traditional acoustic instrument (guitar, banjo, mandolin, etc.) and enjoy singing or playing with others, you are invited to come out and play the first Sunday of each month from 1 - 3 pm. The first jam will be February 1. The Store and Post Office, which illustrates life in rural Mandarin, will be open during this time for tours as well.
Depending on the weather, the jam will be held outside, or inside the old-time store. Either is a perfect setting to join other musicians in a round of sharing and playing together - under the old oaks on this beautiful historic property or inside the building that was the heart of Mandarin for many years. If it’s been awhile since you’ve played, don’t worry. This is an open jam for participants at any level of experience. Dust off that instrument and join right in. Do bring your own chair and water, as we are limited in what we can provide at this location. “Listeners” are welcome, but please bring your chairs too, and enjoy the beautiful music being made by local musicians. It will be a fun time." Location: At the Mandarin Store and Post Office at Mandarin Community Club: - 12471 Mandarin Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32223. The Mandarin Museum & Historical Society and Mandarin Community Club is proud to honor Black History Month by presenting the story of the courageous Sisters of St. Joseph. Eight Sisters from France were asked by the Bishop of St. Augustine, Bishop Augustin Perot, to fulfill a very special mission. They accepted their call and came to Mandarin to teach, and thus starts the story of the recently saved 1889 schoolhouse and why it came to be built. The quarterly lectures are presented in partnership with the Mandarin Community Club to educate the public about historical figures, general history and events in and around Mandarin. The February event will feature information about the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph to bring education specifically to the African-American children in the area who had been recently freed from slavery. The mission actually began in 1866, with the one-room schoolhouse building built for them in 1889. The story of these women of faith is one you will not want to miss. The speaker is Sister Thomas Joseph McGoldrick who wrote the authoritative book, Beyond the Call – The Legacy of the Sisters of St. Joseph in St. Augustine, Florida. She will discuss the history of this important mission in our post Civil War community. Her book will be offered for sale at the event. Sister Thomas Joseph lives in St. Augustine and serves the O'Reilly House Museum. This historic house was the original convent for the sisters in St. Augustine. The program will be presented on Thursday, February 19 at the Mandarin Community Club, which is located at 12447 Mandarin Road. Refreshments are at 6:30 PM with the presentation at 7:00 PM. It is free and all are invited and encouraged to attend. Visit the Mandarin Museum & Historical Society at www.mandarinmuseum.net. |
