The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will hold their annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Sunday, August 9 at the Mandarin Community Club, 12447 Mandarin Road. Scheduled to start at 2 PM, this event will demonstrate the proper way of retiring American flags that are no longer serviceable. According to Scott Breckenridge, Secretary of the Jacksonville Chapter of the Florida Society SAR, "We expect representation from the SAR, DAR, CAR, Boy Scouts and possibly other organizations as well. Children are definitely welcome for this event and are encouraged to attend." During this ceremony, an American flag is deconstructed as the historical meaning and symbolism of the stripes and stars is explained.
The Mandarin Community Club has been partnering with SAR and DAR for the past several years in order to offer this much-needed service to the community. Anyone with a flag they are interested in "retiring" can bring it to the MCC the day of the ceremony. They can also be dropped off at the Club between August 3-6 (Monday thru Thursday). A collection box will be in place at the front door of the Club for this purpose.
